Detailed History & Spiritual Architecture of Grishneshwar

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga (also known as Ghushmeshwar) is revered in Hindu scriptures as the 12th and final Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva on Earth. Situated in Verul village, less than 1 kilometer from the UNESCO World Heritage Ellora Caves near Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), it is one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations in India.

The Architectural Masterpiece of Ahilyabai Holkar: The current temple was reconstructed in the 18th century by the benevolent Maratha queen Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore using reddish-pink basalt stone. The structure features a magnificent 5-tier Nagara-style spire (Shikhara) adorned with intricate carvings of Lord Shiva's manifestations, celestial musicians, and bull Nandi carved out of a single block of stone.

Key Highlights & Sacred Features

1. The 12th Jyotirlinga Shrine

The Swayambhu Jyotirlinga faces East and rests inside a square subterranean Garbhagriha. Devotees can touch the holy Linga directly during regular worship hours.

2. Red Basalt Carvings

Built with fine red stone, the temple walls depict scenes from Hindu epics and exquisite sculptures of Lord Vishnu's 10 incarnations (Dashavatara).

3. Shivalaya Sarovar Pond

The holy lake associated with Ghushma's legend. Taking a holy dip here before entering the temple is considered spiritually purifying.

4. Next to Ellora Caves

Located just 1 km from the famous rock-cut Ellora Caves and the monolithic Kailasa Temple (Cave 16), allowing convenient combo sightseeing.
